The Mackenzie  DeltaHistorical Background

The Northwest Territories Water Board was established under Section 7 of the Northern Inland Waters Act which was proclaimed on February 28, 1972.

The Northern Inland Waters Act and Regulations were replaced with the Northwest Territories Waters Act and Regulations on June 23, 1992.

The Board consists of not less than four and not more than nine members appointed by the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and Northern Development and is made up of at least one nominee of each department of the Government of Canada that in the opinion of the Governor-in-Council are most directly concerned with the management of the water resources in the NWT and at least three nominees of the person occupying the recognized position of Government Leader of the Northwest Territories. The NWT Water Board held its founding meeting in Yellowknife, NWT on April 18,1972.

The NWT Water Board receives administrative and technical support from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) relating to the Board’s mandate.
